This morning all of Divine Comedy got an emotional e-mail from one of the cast, Derk. He quit because his sketch "American Idolatry" was cut from the show list, and that was simply the last straw. Derk has been treated unfairly since the time he joined our troupe. He's been placed in just as many sketches as the other new people, his sketches have been put to votes and have made/been cut from show lists according to popular vote, just like everyone else's. Derk deserved more show time, because he has his own voice, and it has the right to be shared. Derk is not anyone's easel.
On a separate note, another thing I observed today was the noble effort of the BYU ROTC. They were doing a display at the front of the Wilk, and people came to watch. Their choreography was classy, and they could spin those guns nicely. I wanted them to bring some ribbon twirlers out; that'd be nice. Maybe some man-acrobats in army gear. I went up to one of the blue-uniformed guys watching and asked him more about it, like whether these displays help in preparation for actual combat. He said no, but they prepare the hearts of the men and they help these soldiers develop a real respect for our country. I asked if these routines help them more readily reach status as officers, and he basically reinforced that the purpose of these square dances is to make the officers more united and proud of their country, and the underlying message was that it was a respectable thing for boys to do if they weren't manly enough to enlist to the real thing.
Well, there's that.
